Background
Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the “Fertility Temple,” is a Buddhist monastery in Bhutan built in 1499 by Ngawang Choegyel. It is dedicated to Drukpa Kunley, a saint known as the “Divine Madman” because of his unusual teaching methods. Located near the village of Lobesa in the Punakha District, the temple is famous for blessing couples who want to have children. It holds many relics and statues of Drukpa Kunley and is known for its use of phallic symbols to protect against evil spirits.
