Punakha Dzongkhag is located in western Bhutan, bordered by Gasa to the north, Thimphu to the west, and Wangduephodrang to the east and south. The district lies at an altitude of 1100 to 2500 meters above sea level. It currently serves as the winter residence for the Central Monastic Body.
