Semtokha Dzong

Background
Semtokha Dzong, near Thimphu, Bhutan, is the country’s oldest dzong, built in 1629 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. It marks the start of Bhutan’s unification under his leadership. The dzong serves religious and administrative functions and houses the Institute for Language and Cultural Studies. Known for its detailed carvings and ancient murals, Semtokha Dzong is an important historical and cultural site.
