Background
Dochula Pass is a stunning mountain pass located on the road between Thimphu and Punakha in Bhutan. Situated at an elevation of approximately 3,100 meters (10,200 feet) above sea level, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the eastern Himalayas on clear days.
One of the most striking features of Dochula Pass is the Druk Wangyal Chortens, a collection of 108 stupas (chortens). These chortens were built to honor Bhutanese soldiers who lost their lives in a military operation against Assamese insurgents in 2003. Commissioned by the Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, the chortens stand as symbols of peace, stability, and spiritual devotion.
