Background
The Memorial Chorten in Thimphu, Bhutan, was built in 1974 to honor the third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, known as the “Father of Modern Bhutan.” He played a key role in modernizing the country while preserving its culture. The King’s mother, Her Majesty the Royal Grandmother Ashi Phuntsho Choden Wangchuck, had the chorten built. Unlike other stupas that hold Buddha’s relics, this chorten is for the spiritual well-being of the people and is a place for daily prayers and religious activities. It is an important site for locals and visitors to pray and meditate.
